I use it for backups in my company. Amanda saved me when our webserver machine crashed. We backup all our machines to a Quantum tape changer.

I have used Amanda for last 5 years. It is one of the most rock solid open source software I have used. Could absolutely use some additional features. But most important thing is that I have always been able to retrieve lost files, and the transparent architecture of Amanda is assuring.

I have used Amanda for last 1 year, backing up 15 servers, very good results.

osalt's description of Amanda is pretty meager. Amanda is an awesome and intelligent planner and scheduler for backups. It uses native tools to do the actual backups, so recovery is possible even without Amanda.

It is a mature product, but it is under active development, and there are numerous recent developments that can be found on the zmanda web site, including a Windows client, Homeland Security Certification, backup to Amazon S3, and a significant new release coming out with new APIs. Documentation can be found on the wiki at the zmanda web site.
