Citrix Presentation Server (previously known as Citrix MetaFrame) is an advanced remote display application. It makes it possible to run application remotely on large servers, thus making better use on server resources, while at the same time allowing people using other platforms to use the application. E.g. running Microsoft Word in the remote display window on a unix workstation.
These features can also be used by Application Service Providers (ASP), that hosts applications for customer, thus making it simple for customers to access the application without worrying about running a server, making backups, etc. In datacenters Citrix Presentation Server is also used to give users access to the remotely hosted servers.
The more advanced features of Citrix Presentation Server include CPU management to limit CPU for each remote session and security and encryption of sessions based on SSL VPN.
