Eclipse is a standard used wherever I have worked. Its free, extensible and there exist all sorts of plug-ins for various languages.

My one gripe is that it can get quite slow if you have lots of plug-ins or projects with lots of files. Unselecting the auto build option can help.

I tried NetBeans(slow at displaying errors but nice code coloring) and jDeveloper(simply clumsy) but Eclipse imo is the best Java IDE.

Be careful which plug-ins you install. There are a lot of them out there. Some of them do a great job, others are buggy. The IDE itself is wonderful. I work every day with it and I love it!
