Gran Turismo is a racing simulation game with licensed reproductions of real vehicles. Since its first version in 1997, it's been popular in part because it combines arcade style racing with simulator racing. It appeals to those who want action-oriented contests with realistic physics and customized features.

This game has cars from manufacturers like Aston Martin, Dodge, Chevrolet, Toyota and Honda. You can hop into a Viper or an Aston Martin but you can also drive a more realistic car such as a Honda Accord or Mitsubishi Eclipse. If you are a classic car buff, climb into an old Corvette or Supra. They all drive realistically with the unique weight, balance and handling that the real cars were made with. You could conceivably learn to "drive" dozens of different cars.

Most people choose their favorite and work on modifying it. As your winnings accumulate you can add parts and performance enhancers like turbo chargers or bigger engines. You can use your winnings to compensate for your own shortcomings - if you keep spinning out, you can buy tires with more traction.

The arcade and "sim" racing modes have different racing circuits and special events. Just like the real world, you must be certified to race on a circuit which is one of the most common complaints about Gran Turismo.

The racing itself is very realistic. The graphics are excellent; everything looks and sounds real, accompanied by an exciting soundtrack and authentic effects.

In Version 4, Gran Turismo has over 700 cars from 80 manufacturers to select from and includes classics such as the 1886 Daimler Motor Carriage. It also provides concept cars such as the 2022 models and 51 tracks to race on.

Those that want even more realism can purchase a simulator kit that includes a realistic seat, peddles and a steering wheel.
