Nagios is excellent and extensible monitoring tool... plug-ins are great to extend Nagios. Nagios 2.0 is easier than its predecessor. Active community and excellent resources available on web.

Only for small or medium networks, poor manual flatfile configuring. Bad scalable architecture cause fork, fork, fork ;). No discovery methods, poor snmp-functions, poor trap-handling and sysloghandling cause no centralized database.
Good notification and easy extensible with scripting.

By comparison Nagios is a setup nightmare compared to most Enterprise level monitoring suites or even FOSS ones. The manual configuration is at best tedius and frustrating at best in a dynamic environment. For a busy SysAdmin it is a tough sell when alternatives such as Pandora and Zenoss are freely available.
OTOH it is well documented, has great community support and a wide variety of plug ins.
