Seashore 0.1.9
|
Seashore, an open source image editing program for the MacOS's Cocoa framework, stands somewhere between the old MacPaint and Photoshop. Its advantage lies in serving the basic image editing needs of the average computer user who doesn't require a lot of bells and whistles. It has gradients and textures for both text and brush strokes and supports multiple layers and alpha channel editing. Based on GIMP, it uses the same file format. Seashore has enough options for the user with some advanced needs but it's not adequate for professional applications.
Seashore includes layers with more than 20 merging effects and plug-in filters. The user can edit just the primary or alpha channels and its thorough transparency effects include semi-transparent gradients. Its six basic gradient effects have 16 variations. Seashore has a distinct advantage over other image editors; it takes about 20 times less space on your drive. This image editor has a nice selection of 14 basic painting tools and it can correct things such as contrast, color hues and brightness. Sleek in appearance and object oriented, with a detailed user's manual in PDF format, it integrates tightly with MacOS.
This basic image editor isn't perfect but its faults are mainly small annoyances. You have to copy/paste instead of select/drag a part of an image, and Seashore isn't able to save a specific selected area of an open window. It grays out all of the document window except the selected area but these are not major drawbacks. With all its features and abilities, the fast and responsive Seashore is a great basic tool that more than serves the needs of most of its users.
